Case History - Project Triage

Offshore Drilling Tender Barge Upgrade

Our clients had recently purchased an offshore drilling tender barge that required upgrade, repair, and re-activation. The purchase agreement provided that the previous owner was responsible for definition, planning, execution, and delivery of the upgrade, work to be performed in Singapore. The previous owner lacked the capacity to meet the delivery criteria, however, and the project was failing on both schedule and budget parameters.

Schedule & Budget Rescue

We assumed the project management duties and mobilised a rescue team to take the project forward to its completion over a 7 month period.

Emergency Steel Replacement

Our client discovered that the hull of one of its jack-up drilling rigs required substantial emergency steel replacement and decided to perform the repairs on short notice in Nigeria. The client was not confident that the work could be done within its schedule parameters because of the location and emergency nature of the project.

Schedule Rescue

We managed the steel replacement project based on our experience in West Africa and, despite the lack of any prior detailed planning, completed the project ahead of the schedule that our client had initially forecast.

Accommodation Vessel Upgrade

Our client was about to begin the execution phase of a major accommodation vessel upgrade. The project had suffered from inconsistent project management and planning and our client was concerned that the project was distressed and out of control. A timely delivery was of the upmost importance to our client.

Schedule Rescue

We conducted a project review to ascertain the issues and recommended remedial actions to recover the project. Our client retained us for the remainder of the project in an advisory capacity.

MODU Upgrade

Our client had planned to have upgrade, repair, and periodic survey work performed on one of its semi-submersible drilling units in Brazil. Our client had conducted the definition and planning using its in-house operations personnel. The plan did not include a risk analysis and the operations department lacked the capacity to meet the delivery criteria. The project suffered as a consequence.

Execution Capacity

We conducted a project review and later assumed the project management duties. We mobilised a rescue team to take the project forward to its completion. Our team executed the project over a 7 month period.

New Land Rig Construction

Our client discovered that a land rig construction program in Mexico was failing in terms of budget and was concerned that the project lacked adequate overall control relative to the approved budget.

Cost Control Recovery

We sent a project cost controls team to Mexico to investigate the reasons for the failures in project cost controls and recommended remedial actions based on the findings.

MODU Upgrade

Our client was performing upgrade work on one of its drilling rigs in Greece prior to returning it to operations in the Eastern Mediterranean. Our client was concerned that new equipment being installed might adversely affect the drilling rigs operation and realised that the management of change procedure was not working properly.

Operational Rescue

Our specialists conducted an independent drilling equipment risk and operability review and analysis, which identified potential adverse impacts to their operations. We also recommended remedial action on the change management processes.
